Westerns of 1969: Still in the Saddle Film Series

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

Sunday | Feb 8 | 2:00 pm

This movie, directed by George Roy Hill and starring Robert Redford, Paul Newman, and Katharine Ross, is the true story of fast-draws and wild rides, battles with posses, train and bank robberies, a torrid love affair and a new lease on outlaw life in faraway Bolivia. It is also a character study of a remarkable friendship between Butch—possibly the most likeable outlaw in frontier history—and his closest associate, the fabled, ever-dangerous Sundance Kid.

True Grit (1969)

Sunday | Feb 15 | 2:00 pm

This movie, directed by Henry Hathaway and starring John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall, and Dennis Hopper, is a Western film adapted from the Charles Portis’ novel of the same name. Set in 1880, the movie follows determined teenager Mattie Ross as she hires the rough, one-eyed U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) to hunt down Tom Chaney, the outlaw who murdered her father in Fort Smith, Arkansas. They’re joined by a Texas Ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), who also seeks Chaney for killing a senator, leading the unlikely trio into dangerous Indian Territory for a pursuit filled with conflict, classic Western action, and a surprising bond. Some historians believe Cogburn was based on Deputy U.S. Marshal Henry “Heck” Thomas, who brought in some of the toughest outlaws.

Chief Curator Andrew Patrick Nelson will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion with the audience.

The script, by director Sam Peckinpah, Roy N. Sickner and Walon Green, was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Support Your Local Sheriff (1969)

Sunday | Mar 8 | 2:00 pm

This movie, directed by Burt Kennedy and starring James Garner, Joan Hackett, Walter Brennan, Harry Morgan and Bruce Dern, is a parody of a common Western trope: the selfless, rugged stranger who tames a lawless frontier town. Jason McCullough (James Garner) is a gambler who becomes the sheriff of a crime-ridden mining town and uses his wits to enforce the law instead of his gun.

Chief Curator Andrew Patrick Nelson will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion with the audience.

Young Billy Young (1969)

Sunday | Mar 15 | 2:00 pm

This movie, directed by Burt Kennedy and starring Robert Mitchum, Angie Dickinson, Robert Walker, Jr., and David Carradine, is a hard-riding, rugged gun-slinging adventure that’s one of the boldest and most fascinating tales of outcasts, outlaws and lawmen ever filmed. Mitchum is an aging but tough-as-nails lawman that meets up with Young Billy Young (Robert Walker), a fast-draw outlaw on the run after a deadly robbery. Discovering that they have a common enemy, the two men join forces. But it’s a partnership that explodes when the lawmen discover a secret that initiates a barroom brawl… and ends in a six-gun shoot-out that practically rips two towns apart!
