Robert Rodriguez: Cinema Sin Fronteras – Desperado

Stagecoach Movie Poster

1995 Contemporary Western, part two of the Mexico Trilogy.

The mysterious musician-turned-gunslinger El Mariachi (now played by Antonio Banderas) returns to a border town seeking vengeance against the drug lord who destroyed his life. With Desperado, Robert Rodriguez reimagined his ultra-low-budget debut as a stylish studio production—an explosive border Western that blends Mexican folklore with the swagger of classic Hollywood action cinema. The film’s box office success proved that a Latino hero could anchor a major studio action picture, while Rodriguez’s kinetic direction and inventive set pieces cemented his reputation as a master of modern genre filmmaking. Starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Joaquim de Almeida, and Cheech Marin.

Chief Curator Andrew Patrick Nelson will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion with the audience.

This screening is part of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration of the groundbreaking films of Robert Rodriguez.
