Robert Rodriguez: Cinema Sin Fronteras – El Mariachi

1993 Contemporary Western, part one of the Mexico Trilogy.
When a traveling musician carrying a guitar case is confused for a hitman with identical luggage, survival becomes a matter of learning to shoot as skillfully as he plays the guitar. Robert Rodriguez’s ultra-low-budget debut was a breakout hit at Sundance, proving that compelling stories could emerge from anywhere. The film established his signature blend of Mexican folklore and Western action and announced a bold new voice in American independent cinema, unafraid to center a Spanish-speaking protagonist in a genre long dominated by Anglo cowboys. Starring Carlos Gallardo, Consuelo Gómez, and Jaime De Hoyos.
Chief Curator Andrew Patrick Nelson will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion with the audience.
This screening is part of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration of the groundbreaking films of Robert Rodriguez.
