Join John Fritz, American Civil War Reenactor, as he explores two significant New Mexico Civil War battles:
- The Battle of Valverde, fought from February 20-21,1862, near the town of Val Verde by the Rio Grande River was considered a major Confederate success. Confederate Brigadier General Henry Hopkins Sibley envisioned invading New Mexico with his army, defeating Union forces, capturing the capital city of Santa Fe, and then marching westward to conquer California for the Confederacy.
- The Battle of Glorietta Pass, fought from March 26-28, 1862 near Santa Fe, ended the Confederacy’s efforts to capture the territory and other parts of the western United States. This was the westernmost military operation of the Civil War, and the South’s only real attempt to conquer and occupy Union territory. Union General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby commanded the forces that defeated Henry Hopkins Sibley forcing him to retreat to Texas.
