The Ox-Bow Incident – A Classic Western Movie

Stagecoach Movie Poster

A 1943 Western film starring Henry Fonda that was adapted from the 1940 novel of the same name by Walter Van Tilburg Clark. It is the story of what happens after a local rancher is murdered and his cattle stolen. The townspeople join with a number of cowboys (including two new to town) to form a posse to catch the perpetrators. They find three men in possession of the cattle and are determined to see justice done on the spot. It was nominated for an Academy Award for best picture, losing to Casablanca. In 1998 the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry.

Kevin Sandler, Associate Professor at Arizona State University in the Film and Media Studies Program, will add important context to the movie and engage the audience with focused discussion followed by a Q&A session.
