Winchester ’73 – A Classic Western Movie


A1950 Western film noir set in 1876, the film follows the journey of a prized rifle from one ill-fated owner to another, as well as a cowboy’s search for a murderous fugitive. Supporting actors included Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis. Filming locations included Mescal, Ariz. and Old Tucson Studios. The film received a Writers Guild of America Aware nomination for Best Written American Western. In 2015 the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry.
Kevin Sandler, Associate Professor at Arizona State University in the Film and Media Studies Program, will add important context to the movie and engage the audience with focused discussion followed by a Q&A session.
