When we heard that Coleman Charters, the newest member of our Maintenance team, not only loves all things Western Spirit but is also a talented artist, we had to learn more!
We Are Western Spirit! is a new blog series highlighting individuals that work at Scottsdale’s Museum of the West and exemplify our mission of illuminating the past to better shape our future.
WS: Where are you from originally?
CC: I’m from Phoenix originally, but spent a large portion of my younger life traveling with my family. We spent a lot of time in and outside the US.
WS: Tell us how you got into art: inspiration, favorite artists, any schooling, etc.?
CC: I started extremely young doodling on any bit of paper I could get my hands on. Whether that be a napkin or scrap paper, I’ve always had a need to draw. As I got older, I got into making clothing and stickers which evolved into painting and graphic design. When it comes to schooling, I did some time over at Arizona State University and then went on to finish at Phoenix college. Both were wonderful experiences. I’m super inspired by a great artist named Terry Urban. His art is closely described as a street montage of different ideas and subjects.
WS: What type/mediums do you use in your art?
CC: I think the quality of your materials matter, but for the most part, I’ve always used cheaper materials, such as acrylics and permanent ink. Sometimes I have a. Red to incorporate a collage in the background of my art. A mixture of western images and words.
WS: Where is your art currently displayed?
CC: My art is currently displayed at the lovely Gallery known as Art One! They are a community driven gallery that represents students and local Arizona artists for the last 30 years.
WS: Other than your art, what additional hobbies do you have?
CC: I’m an absolute cinema and movie freak! If the names, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, or Ridley Scott is mentioned I will be there first in line every time. Besides that, I love to collect vinyl and physical media.
WS: What’s your favorite part about working at Western Spirit?
CC: I’ve had a lot of jobs in my short life, but I’ve never come across an actual work family. This amazing group of people care deeply about their staff, the museum and the people that visit it. No matter who you’re talking to in the museum I’m sure you will find a friendly face who wants to educate our guests and friends and help out where they can!
WS: What’s your favorite thing to do in AZ/out West?
CC: My favorite thing to do in Arizona is probably hike or go camping! There’s over a million spots you can find that will satisfy the adventurer in anyone.
